Welcome to the Orbit Scorecard newsletter. Each week we share one idea about metrics, data, and running a better business — plus product updates from the team.

This Week: The Fewer Metrics Paradox

There's a counterintuitive truth about business scorecards: adding more metrics makes your scorecard less useful, not more.

A scorecard with 30 metrics produces 30 data points to review every week. Your brain can't process 30 things in a five-minute meeting. So you skim. The red metrics don't get the attention they deserve because they're competing with 29 other numbers.

The teams with the most effective scorecards we've seen track 8–12 metrics. Not because they have fewer things to manage — often the opposite. But because they've forced themselves to answer the harder question: if I could only watch five numbers, which five would tell me whether the business is healthy?

Those five numbers are your scorecard. Everything else belongs in a drill-down dashboard you check when a flag goes up.
